BAYARD RUSTIN (1912-1987)

Publiquei a nota abaixo em 24 de agosto de 2016, ou seja, no 29o. aniversário da morte de Bayard Rustin. Hoje em dia, muita gente nunca ouviu falar nele, mas ele foi figura essencial no movimento pelos direitos civis dos negros estadunidenses, tendo fundado a "Southern Christian Leadership Conference" e o "Congress for Racial Equality". O grande Martin Luther King, Jr. que conhecemos ganhou proeminência no movimento em parte graças a Rustin. Por que então não se ouve falar em Rustin na mesma proporção que em King? Em parte, isso se deve ao fato de Rustin ter sido um homem gay que se recusava a esconder sua identidade numa época pré-Stonewall. Lembrem-se dele.

In the simplification of life that so many fancy, there is the risk Bayard Rustin will be forgotten; that can't be so. Rustin was a major figure of the Civil Rights Movement, the man who articulated Gandhi's and A. Philip Randolph's ideas to Dr. King. He was also tireless in the fight for gay and lesbian rights. What an intrepid man!
