I'm watching a "Bewitched" episode from 1966. Samantha has just told Aunt Clara that Darren (who became "James" in Brazil), who is away on business, has authorized her to negotiate a bank loan in his absence. Aunt Clara replies that she is "very impressed."
In my current course on social change in the 1960s, I have told my students that women were not allowed to get loans then without their husbands' signature. We've come a long way, baby.
